I finally have found some art friends! I am beyond excited to go out and art with other people. It has been so long… Since our previous art day was rained out, we chose the Thursday before Thanksgiving to get together, and we couldn’t have asked for a better day. The sun was shining, there was a gentle breeze, and it was not too hot or too cool. We met up at the Botanic Garden and carried our picnic blankets down to the stream.
I opted to use my Prismacolor Colored Pencils. I have been enjoying getting to know how these work, and I have found a sketch book that these play nicely in. I wish I had more colors, but I am slowly building my collection. Your choice of materials really does make a difference how you create. I am enjoying using colored pencils so much more now that I have the right paper and quality smooth vibrant pencils.
I started my sketch of the stream and trees. I chose this scene because I enjoyed the way the light came through the leaves, and the way it was reflected in the water. I began lightly sketching the darker tree trunks since they stood out and where a definitive shape. I did not try to draw every branch. Are you kidding me? I’d still be there… 😉
I added the leaves next. I chose my more yellow-y greens, rather than ones with a cooler tone. These matched the greens being hit by the sunlight the best. I went back and forth between using the lighter and darker ones and tried to match them in the reflection on the water.
I am so pleased by the results! I even surprised myself a little. It has been a long time since I drew like this and I thought I’d be out of practice. It felt really good to be outside, drawing, and talking with friends. With winter coming on, I am not sure how much we will be meeting outside. I hope to get in a few get togethers. I just love being outside, it’s so inspiring, and having a fellow artist with you really helps the creative juices flow.
What are some creative ways you get together with friends to get creative? I’d love to get some new ideas especially for the winter months. Leave a comment below and let’s encourage each other to get creative! 🙂
